What is the Binary Decimal Hex Converter?
Computers think in binary, programmers often read hexadecimal, and the rest of us use decimal — translating between them by hand is slow and error-prone. This free base converter takes a value in binary, octal, decimal, hexadecimal or plain text and instantly shows every representation, including text encoding and decoding, with strict per-base validation that flags invalid digits immediately.
How to use it
- Type your value into the input box.
- Select what base it is in: Binary, Octal, Decimal, Hexadecimal or Text.
- All conversions appear instantly in the cards below.
- For Text input you get binary, octal, decimal and hex codes per character — and if you paste binary-looking text, it decodes back to readable text.
Key features
- Five input modes: binary, octal, decimal, hexadecimal and text.
- Arbitrary precision via BigInt — very long bit strings convert exactly.
- Strict validation per base with clear error messages.
- Text-to-binary/hex encoding and binary-to-text ASCII decoding.
- Live conversion as you type.
Real-world use cases
- Computer science students checking base-conversion homework.
- Developers reading hex color codes, memory addresses or bitmasks.
- Decoding binary puzzles or CTF challenge strings.
- Understanding how text is stored as numbers (ASCII/Unicode code points).
Practical tips
- Spaces are allowed in binary, octal and hex input — group bits in fours or eights for readability.
- A 0x prefix is fine in hex input (e.g. 0xFF).
- Binary decodes to text only when the bits form whole bytes of printable ASCII.
- For negative decimals, the sign is preserved across all bases.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between binary, octal and hexadecimal?
They are all ways to write the same numbers: binary uses base 2 (0,1), octal base 8 (0–7), decimal base 10 (0–9) and hexadecimal base 16 (0–9, A–F). Hex is popular because one hex digit equals exactly 4 bits.
How does text become binary?
Each character has a numeric code (its Unicode code point). The tool shows that code in binary, octal, decimal and hex — for example “A” is 65 in decimal, 01000001 in binary and 41 in hex.
Why won't my binary decode to text?
Decoding needs complete 8-bit bytes that are all printable ASCII characters (codes 32–126). Odd-length bit strings or non-printable bytes cannot form readable text.
Can it handle very long numbers?
Yes. Conversions use BigInt, so even hundreds of bits convert exactly with no floating-point rounding — unlike calculators that lose precision past 15 digits.
What does the 0x prefix mean?
0x marks a number as hexadecimal in most programming languages. You can include it or leave it out — the converter accepts both.
