What is the Typing Speed Test?

The Typing Speed Test is a free online tool that measures how fast and how accurately you can type. You get a fixed practice paragraph of about 45 words and 60 seconds on the clock. As you type, the tool compares every keystroke against the original text character by character, and shows your live words-per-minute (WPM) rate, your accuracy percentage, and the seconds remaining. The test ends automatically when the timer hits zero, or earlier if you type the whole passage correctly.

How to use it

  1. Click inside the typing box and start typing — the 60-second timer begins with your first keystroke.
  2. Watch your live WPM and accuracy update as you go. Correct characters are highlighted green; mistakes are highlighted red.
  3. Keep going until the timer ends or you finish the passage.
  4. Read your results: final WPM, accuracy, correct characters and total characters typed.
  5. Press Retry to take the test again and beat your score.

How WPM and accuracy are calculated

WPM is the standard typing metric: every five correct characters count as one "word", so WPM equals (correct characters / 5) / minutes elapsed. Only correctly typed characters count toward your speed — random key mashing will not inflate the number. Accuracy is simply correct characters divided by total characters typed, shown as a percentage. Pasting text into the box is disabled so every result reflects real typing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good typing speed?
Around 40 WPM is average for most adults. 60-70 WPM is a solid professional speed for office work, and 80+ WPM is fast. Accuracy matters more than raw speed — 80 WPM at 85% accuracy is worse than 60 WPM at 98% accuracy for real work.
Why does the timer start on my first keystroke?
So you can read the passage and get comfortable before the clock runs. The 60 seconds measure pure typing time, not reading or preparation time.
Can I paste text instead of typing?
No — pasting is disabled to keep results honest. The test only measures characters you actually type, compared character by character against the passage.
How is WPM calculated here?
Standard formula: (correct characters / 5) / minutes. Five characters — including spaces — count as one word. Only correct characters count, so errors lower both your WPM and your accuracy.
Is my typing data sent anywhere?
No. The entire test runs in your browser with no network calls and no account. Your results exist only on the results panel until you reload or retry.
