What is a discount calculator?
A discount calculator takes an original price and a discount percentage and instantly tells you the final price you will pay and the exact amount you save. It removes the mental arithmetic from sale shopping, coupon stacking, and bargaining — whether you are checking a store's "flat 30% off" banner, negotiating with a vendor, or setting sale prices for your own business. The slider and preset buttons make it fast to compare several discount levels side by side.
How to use this tool
- Enter the original price in rupees in the first field.
- Set the discount percent using the slider, the number field, or one of the quick preset buttons (10%, 20%, 30%, 50%).
- The final price, your savings, and the discount are recalculated live as you type — no button press needed.
- Try different presets to compare offers, for example 20% off at one shop versus 30% off at another.
Key features
- Live calculation: every keystroke updates the final price and savings immediately.
- Synced slider and number input, so you can drag for rough values or type for exact ones.
- One-tap preset buttons for the most common discount levels.
- Three large result cards showing the final price, the amount saved, and the discount applied.
- Discount is capped at 100% and negative prices are rejected with a clear hint, so you never see a nonsense result.
Common use cases
- Sale shopping: verifying the checkout price during seasonal sales and mega discount events.
- Bargaining: quickly checking what a vendor's quoted "special price" really represents as a percentage.
- Small business: setting sale prices and checking margins before printing discount tags.
- Coupons and vouchers: seeing the real rupee value of a percentage-off coupon on a specific item.
- Bulk buying: comparing supplier quotes that use different discount percentages.
Practical tips
- Always compare final prices, not discount percentages — 40% off an inflated price can cost more than 20% off a fair one.
- Watch for "up to X% off" banners: the headline discount often applies to only a few items, so run the numbers on the item you actually want.
- When discounts stack (for example 20% off plus an extra 10%), they multiply rather than add: the combined saving is 28%, not 30%.
- For business pricing, work backwards from the final price you want and the margin you need to find the maximum discount you can offer.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is a discounted price calculated?
Multiply the original price by the discount percent, divide by 100 to get the saving, then subtract it from the original price. A Rs 2,500 item at 20% off saves Rs 500, so you pay Rs 2,000.
What happens if I enter a discount above 100%?
The calculator caps the discount at 100%, which would make the item free. Anything above that is not a meaningful discount, so it is treated as 100%.
Do stacked discounts add up?
No. A 20% discount followed by 10% off the reduced price gives a total saving of 28%, not 30%, because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price.
Can I use this for currencies other than rupees?
Yes. The math is identical for any currency — just read 'Rs' as your own currency symbol when interpreting the results.
Is my data stored anywhere?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser and nothing you enter is sent or stored on any server.
