Cleaning options

What is the Whitespace Cleaner?

This free online tool fixes messy whitespace in pasted text: it trims leading and trailing spaces from each line, collapses runs of multiple spaces into one, strips trailing spaces, and can delete empty lines entirely. It shows character counts before and after, so you can see exactly how much clutter was removed. All processing happens in your browser — no sign-up, no uploads.

How to use it

  1. Paste your messy text into the box — for example, text copied from a PDF or Word document.
  2. Tick the cleaning options you want; the most useful ones are on by default.
  3. Click “Apply cleaning” and compare the before/after character counts.
  4. Copy the cleaned result with one click.

Practical tips

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this tool change the words in my text?
No. It only touches whitespace — spaces, tabs, and blank lines. Your words, punctuation, and line order stay exactly the same.
What is the difference between trim and remove trailing spaces?
Trimming removes spaces from both ends of every line. Removing trailing spaces only cleans the end of each line, preserving intentional indentation at the start.
Can it fix text with double spaces between sentences?
Yes. “Collapse multiple spaces” turns any run of two or more spaces or tabs into a single space throughout the text.
Is it safe for code?
Mostly, but be careful: trimming every line removes indentation that languages like Python rely on. Untick “Trim each line” when cleaning code.
Where does my text go?
Nowhere. Cleaning runs locally in your browser and your text is never uploaded or stored.
