Price your freelance work with confidence

Most freelancers undercharge because they guess their rate instead of calculating it. This free online freelance rate calculator works backwards from the monthly income you actually want, so your rate covers expenses, taxes and the unpaid hours every freelancer has.

How to use it

Enter your desired monthly income (what you want to keep), your billable hours per week (only the hours clients pay for — be honest; 20–25 is realistic for most freelancers), your monthly business expenses (software, internet, coworking) and your tax rate. The calculator shows three numbers: your minimum hourly rate (the floor you must never go below), a recommended rate with a 20% buffer for admin, marketing and holidays, and an 8-hour day rate.

The formula, in plain English

Billable hours per month = weekly billable hours × 4.33. The gross amount you must earn = (desired income + expenses) ÷ (1 − tax rate), because taxes come off the top. Divide that gross by your billable hours and you get the true minimum hourly rate. The recommended rate adds 20% because no freelancer bills every hour they work.

Quoting projects

Use the quote estimator: enter your honest hour estimate, pick a rush multiplier for tight deadlines, and you get a suggested fixed quote based on your recommended rate. Rush work should always cost more — it displaces other clients and eats your evenings. This tool works in any currency; just read the $ sign as PKR, EUR, £ or whatever you earn in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my calculated rate higher than I expected?
Because the math includes everything: expenses, taxes and the fact that you only bill a fraction of the hours you work. The 20% buffer covers marketing, admin, holidays and sick days.
What should I enter for billable hours per week?
Only the hours clients actually pay for — not total working hours. Most freelancers bill 15–25 hours a week; the rest goes to finding clients, admin and learning.
How do I handle taxes if I am not sure of my rate?
Enter your best estimate of the effective percentage you lose to income tax. It is better to overestimate slightly than to discover a shortfall at tax time.
Should I ever charge below the minimum rate?
Rarely. The minimum rate is your break-even floor. Occasional strategic discounts for great portfolio pieces are fine, but regular below-floor work means you are subsidizing your clients.
Can I use this for PKR or other currencies?
Yes. The calculator is currency-agnostic — just treat the $ symbol as your own currency (PKR, EUR, £, INR, AED) throughout.
